ESTUARY is the new solo project of Deirdre Morgan, ethnomusicologist, interdisciplinary performer, and educator. An estuary is the place where the river meets the sea, where freshwater mingles with saltwater and creates a highly dynamic environment, a liminal mixing of fluvial and marine realms. In this project, ESTUARY is the place where two archaic sonic technologies meet: the mouth harp, an ancient drone instrument found in many cultures around the world, and the Line 6 DL4, a vintage delay modeller that is one of the best-selling effects pedals of all time. Here, the mouth harp and its overtones are imagined as the river and the DL4 as the sea, the textural particulate and sediment of the harp flowing into the waves of tidal delay and rolling loops generated by the DL4. Inspired by the limitations and potential of both these forces, ESTUARY explores what is possible at the point where two singular sonic bodies meet.
We're grateful to collaborate and produce on the shared, stolen, unceded, ancestral and traditional territories of Penelakut, Lamalcha, Hwitslum and other Hul’qumi’num speaking peoples, as well as the ceded territories of Tsawwassen First Nation, on what is now known as Galiano Island, British Columbia. We recognize the complex impacts that hosting settlers and non-settlers has on the Indigenous land and peoples of this area, and we aim to be responsible and accountable for these impacts and our footprint—whether cultural, environmental or social.
We acknowledge the generous support of our partners and funders:
